Egmont, Op. 84 Overture

from Winter Concert 2014 by Redlands Community Orchestra

/

about

Ludwig van Beethoven (1809-1810)
In 1809 Beethoven received a commission to write incidental music for a revival of Goethe’s play “Egmont.” Count Egmont was a sixteenth century resistance fighter in the Netherlands struggle against the Spanish occupation. He was captured and executed, but faced his fate bravely and became an inspiration to the Dutch.
The Beethoven overture takes the listener through a digest of the entire story, from the dark and brooding mood of the Count’s death sentence portrayed by ponderous, thudding opening chords to the brilliant fanfares and piccolo flourishes producing an exhilarating feeling of moral and military victory at the end.
