Kaiser-Walzer, Op. 437 (Emperor Waltz)

from Winter Concert 2014 by Redlands Community Orchestra

/

about

Johann Strauss II (1889)
Johann Strauss Jr. composed the Kaiser-Walzer opus 437 as part of a celebration of a visit by Austrian emperor Franz Joseph to the German Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1889. The two Strausses, father and son, were immensely popular in Vienna as composers of waltzes. The work of the younger Strauss is infused with elegance, charm and memorable melodies.
In form the Emperor Waltzes is laid out in sections which move from one to the next without pause. An introduction in slow march time is followed by four waltzes and an extended coda in which much material from the preceding waltzes is recapitulated. At the end a sort of coda to the coda leads to a brilliant ending.
