Symphony No. 4, Op. 90, II. Andante con moto

about

Felix Mendelssohn (1833)
As a composer Felix Mendelssohn was very precocious, writing masterfully by the age of sixteen. In his early twenties his parents sent him on a European tour lasting about two years. This resulted in two “Scottish” works and the “Italian” symphony. Mendelssohn’s letters home describe him working on the first drafts while staying in Rome but the work remained unfinished for a couple of years. In 1833 he completed the Italian Symphony to fulfill a commission by the London Symphony (now the Royal Philharmonic).
Although well received, the composer was not satisfied with the work and suppressed it pending a series of revisions. The work was not published until after Mendelssohn’s death in 1847 and the published version was the London Symphony version. It may be that the strengths of the work as we know it are due more to its youthful freshness and charm than for lucidity or contrapuntal clarity, but it has remained steadfastly in the orchestral repertoire.
Cast in four movements, the symphony is essentially classical in form. The last movement blends two southern Italian folk dance forms, Saltarello and Tarantella, both characterized by frenzied movements. In an unusual twist the symphony begins in a major key and ends in the tonic minor.
